Leading the Way With Building Information Modeling Education

AGC recognized early on that BIM would change the industry and has made sure the right tools are available to keep its members ahead of the curve. Last year, AGC launched Unit 1: BIM 101 an Introduction to Building Information Modeling, the first of four courses in the BIM Education Program. Since that time, more than 2100 individuals have completed the first and second course, Unit 2: BIM Technology, at 25 Chapters and member companies around the country. With the completion of the final two courses—Unit 3: BIM Contract Negotiation and Risk Allocation and Unit 4: BIM Process, Adoption and Integration—AGC has congratulated its first graduate, Matthew Baker, virtual construction coordinator at PJ Dick. Baker began using BIM more than two years ago, but lamented that there was no “road map” to help get started. “Fortunately the AGC BIM Education Program followed me through my development and helped me fine-tune our process,” said Baker. “Construction is ever-changing and BIM is at the root of this change. Only by getting educated on the basics of the BIM process can we fully realize the benefits that it will offer the industry.  The AGC BIM Education Program is the start of the education that the industry needs.” Not only will the BIM Education Program assist contractors with BIM adoption, it will help distinguish them in a completive marketplace, especially with the release of the first construction industry BIM credential of its kind, the Certificate in Management—Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM). The credential will be granted to individuals who complete the four BIM Education Program courses and successfully pass the CM-BIM assessment, first available in the Spring of 2011.
