ICE Steps Up Enforcement with Form I-9 Audits

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a division within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has notified approximately 650 companies of the intent to audit their I-9 forms, just half way through 2009.  By comparison, the agency reports that it audited approximately 500 companies in all of 2008.  These audits are ICE's first steps in addressing and deterring employers from hiring illegal workers.  For details on this initiative, read AGC's article DHS to Focus on Prosecuting Employers Who Hire Illegal Workers, which was published on May 15, and includes Best Practices for employers to maintain compliance with immigration laws.
