Webinar One: Drivers, Risks, & Strategies for Contractors Building for Climate Conscious Markets

There are a variety of powerful factors driving the rate at which contractors are being called on to build with climate change impacts in mind. These include not only public policy and financial factors, but even talent attraction and retention.

Knowing the risks involved in the growing climate change conscious marketplace is crucial to engaging in this work successfully. In this presentation, we will review these risks that include but are not limited to unfamiliar products, methods, designers/subcontractors, financial, legal, regulatory, etc.

In addition, significant time will be spent detailing strategies to develop an awareness of steps that can be taken to prepare. This includes information on the necessary knowledge, people, processes, and peers to keep in mind.

Construction lawyer, Jessica Mederson, and construction manager, Monika Serrano, set out to write an article on this topic in early 2021. During their research and conversations with experts in the field of law, design and construction, insurance and risk, they learned much. Join us as they share the information they gathered, industry trends, lessons learned and why incorporating resilience in your next project may be your next best strategy to manage your risk, reputation, and bottom line.

Mónika Serrano leads the resilience program at Turner Construction. Mónika is a LEED AP, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, Living Future Ambassador, WEDG Associate and a Climate Reality Project Leader. She has held roles in most phases of the construction process in her 18 years in the industry. Mónika considers climate change one of the biggest threats to humanity and is passionate about working towards preparing for a challenging future. She constantly collaborates with folks in the design, engineering, construction, risk and insurance industries as she believes in the power of partnerships to move the needle towards a vital world. Mónika grew up in Venezuela and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Lafayette College.

Jessica Mederson

Jessica Mederson is a partner at Stafford Rosenbaum in Madison, Wisconsin. After practicing for a decade in Texas she moved to Wisconsin, where she litigates business and IP matters in state and federal courts across the United States, focusing her practice on construction disputes, UCC litigation, contract disputes, director/officer and shareholder litigation, employer-side employment litigation, and patent infringement litigation. Jessica also advises corporate clients on contractual negotiation issues and employment law and has extensive experience with both ediscovery issues, including cross-border discovery, and attorney-client privilege issues. Jessica is a member of the Precast Concrete Institute and its Financial/Risk Management Committee. She is also certified for entry into OSHA Permit-Required Confined Spaces. She writes and presents nationally on addressing resiliency in construction projects and business operations. She is admitted to practice in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, and Florida as well as a number of federal courts across the Midwest and in Texas.
