The history of the consulting constructor and their impact on this country and around world stands as a testament to the valued and unparalleled expertise which individuals have brought to the construction community. The purpose of the Council is to recognize those in our industry who have made significant contributions to the quality and professionalism associated with commercial construction professionals. Many in the industry have risen to prominence from small companies, while still others made their way in some of this country’s largest construction businesses. Yet today, and despite their chosen paths, each maintains an emphasis on quality of deliverables and a desirable, mutually beneficial relationships with customers and clients for a job well done.
The 2021 CCC Gala, with a theme of “Hot Havana Nights” started with a goal of raising $100,000 for student education in the Construction industry. Within two hours the group met that goal and exceeded it times four including generous donations of $250,000 by Procore’s HBCU challenge fund, a $62,500 donation and new scholarship fund established with AGC Georgia, and a $25,000 HBCU fund donation by Bob Bowen.

The 2021 CLC Leadership Development Conference (LDC) was held in Chicago, IL August 11-13. Co-hosted by AGC of America and the Chicagoland AGC. The event brought together over 250 emerging construction leaders from across the country in various construction sectors to network, learn and share.

Paul McLaughlin, Manager of Continuous Improvement for the Butz Family of Companies, which includes GBCA member Shoemaker Construction Co., has been a member of GBCA’s Construction Leadership Council Steering Committee since 2020. Representing the CLC, he has also served on GBCA’s Government Affairs and Education Committees. While he was introduced to the construction trades from his family, it was during his freshman year at Drexel University that he cemented his pursuit of a career in construction. Upon learning that Construction Management was a major and after sitting in on a class, he immediately changed his major. Now in the industry, he values seeing the tangible results: The most rewarding thing for him is being able to see a project materialize from design through to a finished product.
Each year the AGC Education and Research Foundation offers undergraduate and graduate level scholarships to students enrolled in ABET or ACCE accredited construction management or construction related engineering programs. The application opened July 1, 2021 and closes November 1, 2021.
With COVID-19 restrictions lifting in the City of Philadelphia, GBCA’s Construction Leadership Council has come back together in-person! On June 10, 2021, the CLC hosted an in-person workshop and networking event at a local brewery. After 15 months of virtual meetings, virtual workshops, and virtual “meet-ups,” the CLC wanted an opportunity to rethink networking, and get a refresher on making business and industry connections. Matt Blank, Director of Business Development of Friedman LLP, spoke about building business through networking and relationships, as opposed to a hard sell. This approach to business development and relationship-building starts with a strong conversation.
Over the last year, the AGC Lean Construction Forum has been working with Dodge Data & Analytics (Dodge) and the Lean Construction Institute (LCI) to determine, across the experiences of many construction firms, the specific project practices, policies and tactics that most frequently correlate to better project outcomes and greater professional satisfaction.

As the director of marketing and social media for Small Giants, Kimberly Werner has worked in the design and construction industry since 2003, joined Small Giants in 2009 and moved to Colorado in 2015 to lead the expansion of Small Giants in the Denver market. In addition to her day-to-day responsibilities of proposal development, websites and social media, she focuses on Denver’s business development to showcase Small Giants as an industry marketing expert. In addition to being an active member of the AGC America Business Development Forum Steering Committee, Kimberly serves as the Denver Chapter President of the BD Guild, Communications Chair of the CoreNet Global Colorado Chapter, and the Communications Chair and Advisory Board for A Precious Child.
