Fall Prevention Campaign
OSHA recently announced the third year of the Construction Fall Prevention Campaign. As part of this year's campaign, OSHA, NIOSH and the NORA Construction Sector Council (campaign partners which includes AGC of America), are asking employers to participate in a National Fall Prevention Safety Stand-Down during the week of June 2-6, 2014. We are asking AGC chapters and members to set aside time during that week to have an open discussion with their workers about falls and how to prevent them. Falls remain the leading cause of death in construction. In 2012, there were 279 fall fatalities (35%) out of 806 total fatalities in construction.
Stop Falls: National Safety Stand-Down
In 2014, the national safety stand-down will provide a great opportunity to highlight the importance of fall prevention to the AGC family. Last year, nearly 2,500 employers and over 50,000 workers took part in regional stand-downs that were held around the country. This year, the goal is to involve 25,000 employers and 500,000 workers. If met, our industry we will have touched almost 1 out of 10 construction workers in the country.
AGC Chapter and Member Participation
We are asking you — AGC chapters and members — to help promote the fall prevention campaign, and the stand-down, by raising awareness among workers and employers about fall hazards, and by providing information they can use to prevent injury and death. By helping raise awareness about the hazards of falls, you will be part of a concerted effort throughout the nation to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that result from falls in construction. We are confident that AGC, AGC chapters and members can assist with achieving the set goals and demonstrate the highest commitment to safety and health in the construction industry.
