General Building Contractors Association GBCA CLC Moves Virtual to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

The COVID-19 response in the Philadelphia region has left young construction professionals working under strict safety protocols, working from home, or even temporarily out of work. In response, GBCA’s CLC moved all its activities, including community service, online.

Every June, GBCA’s CLC supports Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that raises research funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Usually, fundraising kicks off at GBCA’s Golf Outing and continues with a lemonade stand outside of GBCA’s offices in Philadelphia. This year, GBCA had to cancel its Golf Outing, and Philadelphia’s stay-at-home orders meant that the traditional Lemonade Stand on the sidewalk needed to be moved online.

The CLC Steering Committee recorded a promotional video for the campaign which launched mid-June and will run until July 31. By the end of June, the campaign had reached nearly half of its $3000 goal!

The CLC is also continuing its other activities online. The At-Large CLC Committee recently met to brainstorm how the CLC can still create opportunities for young construction professionals to connect and grow together in the industry.

The CLC’s Leadership Series workshops (traditionally lunch and learns at GBCA headquarters) will now focus on pivoting toward the new virtual environment in which we increasingly find ourselves: Handling Stress in Crisis, Becoming a Digital Leader, and How to Present Online.

Even though COVID-19 response has changed how we work, GBCA’s CLC is excited to continue finding different methods to engage with one another and with our local communities in need.
