House Committee Examines Technology Use in Construction

The House Small Business Subcommittee on Contracting and Infrastructure this week held a hearing to learn about “Smart Construction: Increasing Opportunities for Small Business in Infrastructure.” AGC of New York State member Ryan Forrestel, Cold Springs Construction, Akron, NY presented testimony about his company’s use of 3D models for machine guidance systems in both their grading and paving operations to enhance productivity and worker safety. Forrestel called for broader adoption of technology across the construction industry and urged increased understanding of technology by state and federal agencies and efforts to reduce technology interface issues. Forrestel expressed his support for a provision included in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s highway reauthorization bill, creating an Accelerated Implementation of Advanced Digital Construction Management Systems program that would provide $20 million per year from FY21 through FY25 to increase state and local use of digital construction management systems, practices, performance and benefits. Trimble, Inc a manufacturer of 3D guidance systems for construction equipment also participated in the hearing.
