House Bill to Expedite Offshore Drilling Permits Passes, Moves to Senate

The House passed legislation this week designed to streamline the permitting process for oil and gas drilling in federal waters off Alaska. The legislation, the Jobs and Energy Permitting Act of 2011, requires the Environmental Protection Agency to take final action on a permit application in six months or less, and it would limit opponents’ ability to appeal permits. The measure joins other GOP-sponsored oil and gas drilling bills the House has easily passed this year, however this one has garnered support in the Senate as well. Alaska’s two senators, Energy and Natural Resources ranking member Lisa Murkowski and Democrat Mark Begich, have introduced companion legislation. AGC will continue to monitor this legislation as it progresses through the Senate. For more information, contact Scott Berry at (703) 837-5321 or berrys@agc.org.
