PHMSA Releases Summary of State Damage Prevention Laws

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has released its summary document of state damage prevention laws. The document summarizes state damage prevention laws relative to specific characteristics of the laws as they relate to requirements applicable to excavators and utility operators. The summary document examines more than 60 points of law and includes actual statutory language where applicable. At this point in the process, while other state laws may impact some of the points of law surveyed, only state damage prevention laws were examined. PHMSA also makes no comparison of one state’s laws to another in this document. As this document evolves, PHMSA intends to create an interactive web presence for the document, to better aid in locating the relevant parts of a state’s damage prevention law. The summary document can be found on PHMSA’s Damage Prevention Stakeholder Webpage or can be downloaded directly here.
