Educating through Entertainment with Game-based Learning

Dan Hannan, CSP, CHMM, Safety Director, Associated General Contractors of Minnesota

Game-based learning is quickly being recognized as an effective means of delivering educational content. When done correctly, games engage, entertain, and evoke emotion - the keys to creating a meaningful learning experience with staying power. Games, especially those that are fast-paced and visually stimulating, speak to the learning preferences of those entering the workforce today. A properly constructed and delivered game challenges learners and offers trainers a valuable tool to educate and overcome classroom boredom.

Two computer-based game training tools will be demonstrated with a construction safety application - one for instructor - led activities addressing content review and a second, virtual construction site simulation where hazards must be identified and mitigated.

By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how games can be used to educate adults;
  • Discuss key elements in game design that are used to meet program specific learning objectives; and
  • Compare games for both classroom and one-on-one training activities.
