Partnering Case Studies

Degray Lake & Lake Greeson

Degray Lake and Lake Greeson
Repair and Project Roads
Clark and Pike Counties, Arkansas

Partnering Lesson:

  • Funding level was maintained by contractor participation.
  • Partnering ensured advanced design problem solving was done jointly and quickly.

Project Description
The project was to repair existing failed pavement areas, place granular base courses, place asphalt surfaces, place granular shoulder courses, remove and dispose existing pavement, create pavement markings, and perform environmental protection at all sites.

Project Challenges:

  • Work was in geographically separated locations.
  • Work was performed on public roadways and recreational sites in camping areas.

Issue 1:
Following the completion of Skyline Road, logging operations caused damage that required additional repairs. The Facilities Manager, Resident Engineer and the contractor jointly determined the extent of additional repair. The effort required several weeks beyond the time that the contractor could have completed this work and moved to other locations, and resulted in a completed product without having to expend any additional funds immediately for repairs.

Issue 2:
The repairs to Cowhide Cove Recreation area included a unique mix design. The area was subject to flooding and wave wash damage, so the design change was experimental. Problems with the design were identified, and the contractor and the design engineer together discussed alternate solutions, made adjustments to the mix design, and modified placement methods resulted in a superior product for the customer.

Benefits of Partnering:

  • Excellent product for the customer with increased quality at a minimal cost growth
  • Immediate and long-term dollar savings
