AGC's Project Management Development Program in San Antonio

Co-hosted by AGC of America and the San Antonio Chapter.

AGC is thrilled to launch the new Project Manager Development Program (PMDP) for early-career project managers or those looking to move into such a role. The five-course program covers the essentials of project management and provides a solid foundation for long-term career development.

AGC of America is excited to partner with the San Antonio AGC in order to teach a new generation of project managers the essential skills to ensure project success.

The PMDP is a set of highly interactive modules that include discussions, class activities and presentations, and provide participants the skills essential to their careers as project managers. Each module is 16 hours long and will be delivered over two days.

Module 1 of this series was offered in May 2009. If you missed this program, don't worry! Modules do not need to be taken sequentially.

  • Module 2: Contract Administration | September 17-18, 2009
  • Module 3: Project Administration | November 12-13, 2009
  • Module 4: Risk Management | January 21-22, 2010
  • Module 5: Leadership | April 8-9, 2010

Register now to attend these highly interactive programs! AGC members can register for Modules 2-5 for only $1,600 or individually for $400 (non-member registration are $2000 for the series or $500 per course). Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, only 22 seats are available!

Participants are expected to arrive on time, attend the program from start to finish, complete the post-program evaluation. Successful completion is also determined based on contribution to in-class discussions and activities.

Module 2: Contract Administration

In this course you will:

  • Recognize how basic contracts are structured and why documentation relates to effective contracting
  • Recognize important construction law and contract language, and their relationship to project risk
  • Differentiate between agent and independent contracts, torts and contractual liability cases, and criminal and civil proceedings
  • Learn how different project delivery methods use different contracting strategies
  • Acquire knowledge of the process for contract amendments, changes, extensions, and final terms
  • Distinguish between partial and material breaches and understanding the significance of termination, bankruptcy, and breach of contract claims

Module 3: Project Administration

In this course you will:

  • Recognize the different areas of planning and how using them at different stages effects the success of a project
  • Identify how environmental issues, Lean construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM) impact the industry
  • Define of how building codes, permits, reviews, and inspections impact the project
  • Learn the importance of scheduling, including purchasing long-lead items
  • Identify the basics of the Uniform Commercial Code and material handling risks
  • Learn the importance of document control, including submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings
  • Understand the importance of project closeout and warranty management

Module 4: Risk Management

In this course you will:

  • Define how risk changes over phases of a project
  • Identify the types and sources of risk
  • Explore techniques for managing risk
  • Identify how the scope and nature of risk management varies with the project delivery method
  • Learn about warranty periods and liability tails
  • Explore the basics of insurance, sureties and bonding
  • Recognize the importance of documentation in controlling risk
  • Recognize how quality control/quality assurance plans help mitigate performance risk
  • Identify how risk and profit are related

Module 5: Leadership

In this course you will:

  • Identify the difference between leading and managing
  • Recognize the importance of communication in effective leadership
  • Develop techniques for motivating others and negotiating solutions to conflicts
  • Broaden awareness of ethical standards and professional responsibilities
  • Recognize the importance of teamwork
  • Understand the basics of leadership tasks
  • Review the role of the human resource function
  • Explore coaching and mentoring opportunities
  • Recognize how to effectively manage change
  • Learn how to achieve a healthy balance between work and family
